JOIN US IN SPACE WITH IMMERSIVE STORYTELLING

With Rocket Science, we developed an interactive universe to immerse viewers in our creations. We dreamt up an environment that would enable us to flex our imaginations, free from terrestrial rules, and challenge the all-too-familiar saying: “It ain’t rocket science!”

VR Animation

While it may not be actual rocket science, the work performed to set the action in an interactive mock 3D space (in space!) was substantial. For a one-minute video, a total of 6 interior panes had to be designed, individually animated, and “sewn” together to create the impression the viewer is standing in a real Rocket Lab packed with wacky experiments.

Welcome to the Fun Area!

This is where we highlight a few of the challenges we overcame in order to complete Rocket Science with utmost precision.

Parallax

Everything looks flat when there’s no parallax, so we played with shape, shadow, and volume to accentuate the 3D perspective. Particles were also added in the air to accentuate the floating 3D space.

Sound

We created a custom soundtrack that would envelop the viewer in the space, since sounds could not be made directional based on where the viewer is looking.

Character Design

We chose to give our scientists exaggerated noses, in order to accentuate the 3D movement of their heads. This proved to be quite challenging considering many of the scientists are wearing helmets! We also added multiple arms to one character to add complexity to his movement.

CHARACTER DESIGN & STORY

Four vignettes of action simultaneously take place in our Rocket Lab. On the far left, we can witness an experiment gone wrong when a popsicle-eating scientist unexpectedly grows a third eye and antennae. His colleagues to his right are carefully repairing the rocket for imminent takeoff, while our six-armed controller performs an extensive pre-flight checklist. And to the far right, we can see a few off-duty scientists take turns moonwalking!

By creating multiple vignettes that unfold simultaneously over the span of a minute, we ensure that viewers can follow the action regardless of where they look, ultimately creating a continuous and entertaining immersive environment.

Imagine featuring your product in a similar setting, revealing parts of your story or branding message as viewers interact with the space.

The potential is huge and would be a wonderful experiential marketing asset for any brand looking to capture its audience’s attention in a novel way.
